The Feel Good File from September 25th, 2020

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. Ain’t it the truth? We had high hopes that autumn would bring a renewed sense of order to our lives amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the past seven months, but those fall flutters quickly turned into trepidation about school and activities for our kiddos. Outside of our parenting bubbles, however, September was a rockstar for activism. She championed Climate Week NYC, the annual event in which delegates and activists from around the world (including yours truly last year!) gathered (virtually) at The U.N. to promote climate change, renewable energy, and yes, even sustainable fashion initiatives. New York Fashion Week and its global counterpart gave proverbial runways to upcyled designs by the biggest names in the game. And #secondhandseptember, the movement championed by Oxfam International, will prevail all year long.

And we said goodbye to one of our generation’s greatest heroes: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a crusader, a wife, a mother, and a grandmother who fought for a more fair and equitable society. May her memory be a call to activism.

Here’s the scoop on what we loved and what’s to come.

Here’s to the original: The Wall Street statue by Kristen Visbal, Fearless Girl, got a fitting makeover this week in an ad by State Street Global Advisors, who originally commissioned the piece in 2017. “Here’s to the original,” the ad states, showing Girl wearing a lace collar resembling RBG’s. “We created Fearless Girl to inspire and promote women in leadership,” the fund’s CEO said in a statement on Monday. The lace collar was a fitting way to acknowledge “the remarkable life and legacy of Justice Ginsburg.”

Lace lays down the law: The fashion choices we make can express much more than our sartorial tastes. That was certainly the case with late, great Ruth Bader Ginsburg–who understood the power of our wardrobes. Read here how RBG used her iconic lace collar as not only an accessory, but a gauntlet.

Make #SecondhandSeptember forever: Harper’s Bazaar reminds us of the three fashion principals to take into the year: Buy preloved, love it while you’ve got it, then relove it. Rosie Huntington-Whitley and more share their tips at HarpersBazaar.com.

Even Prada reloves: For Fall 2020, Prada teamed with auction house Sotheby’s to relove its latest collection for a good cause. Proceeds from the upcoming October 2 auction (you’ve still got time!) will benefit UNESCO educational projects for vulnerable populations across the globe. The collection is appropriately dubbed “Tools of Memory.” Here’s why:

“What we create today becomes a memory for tomorrow,” states the Prada press release. “That is especially true in fashion, runways show… Future histories. Clothes are mnemonic devices – they remind us of mood, of emotion and of experience. They are in themselves predictions of tomorrow, objects of desire, tools of memory. This Prada auction and campaign creates a memory that can give back, to help the future.”

Waste Not: This month’s catwalk saw an influx of collections built using deadstock and upcycled fabrics from the collections of past seasons. What a concept! Here are a few of our favorite looks, inspired by this Vogue article.
